Project 2: Complex Illustration

Create an 8x10 vector illustration, representing a single word or concept, using photographs as your reference. Examples of words or concepts include “fun,” “nostalgia,” “consequences,” “fantasy,” “one night stand,” “broken heart,” etc. The image’s meaning does not have to be obvious, but use that word or concept as your inspiration for your aesthetic choices. Keep the Elements of Design that we went over last class in mind. You will be graded on the mastery of your Illustrator tools. So make the image as detailed as you can.

Project 1: Logo (Part 3)

Create the final logo in Illustrator, based off of one of your sketches. You do not have to follow your base sketches to the T, if you find a design flaw that your final version resolves. If you deviate from your original sketch, simply explain why you did so. If you decided to make any additional sketches or mock-ups before the final, include those in your blog as well as it shows your progress. Your grade will be based off of effort, competency with the tools, your overall development from concept to completion and your explanation of your final decisions.

I chose this logo as my final logo because it gave the clearest idea of what my product is. I also changed the name to "pocket mom" instead of "where's my?" and am now using that as the slogan for the product. I also liked the red and yellow colors that I used in this logo.

Assignment 3: Calligramme

Create a Caligramme in Apollinaire’s way. Google “calligramme Apollinaire” for reference) For the text, you can use song lyrics, a poem, a story, the same text repeated over and over again, or anything else so long as it has relevance to the image (for example, quotes from Edgar Allen Poe’s “Raven” filling up the image of a raven). Adjust the font, colors, spacing and positioning of the text as needed to enhance the imagery.

Project 1: Logo (Part 2)

Make 5-10 Thumbnail sketches of different logos for your fictional company or product. Simply changing the font from lowercase or uppercase, or making very slight changes does not count. Try at least 5 completely different approaches to the logo.

Assignment 2: Logo Critiques

Find 5 logos from any company, product, creative endeavor (TV series, game series, book series) Make a new post (or multiple posts if you can’t fit all of the logos on one post), with the image of the logo along with a description of your opinion on the logo’s effectiveness. How does the logo make you feel? Does it seem fun? Serious? Does it look like it’s for kids? Does it look like a logo designed for women? Why? What part does the color play, if any? Do you agree with their color choices? Why?

1. I really like the Walt Disney World Pictures logo. The Walt Disney logo has a fun feeling to it with the unique font. The castle displays the center of the park being Cinderella's Castle which is like every little kid's dream. The half circle around the castle makes the logo look complete and also reminds me of an array of fireworks like they do every night in Magic Kingdom. Disney is mainly a place for kids so the logo attracts lots of kid's along with people of all ages. As much as I like this logo, I think some color would make it better.

2. I'm not sure if this is the official logo for the 2012 Summer Olympics but I found it on the BBC website talking about the upcoming Summer Olympics in London. I think this would be an awesome logo to use for them with the numbers incorporated in the word "London." It definitely grabs my attention and the font used has a cool look to it and helps the numbers blend in with the letters but also stick out enough being able to notice they're being used in both ways.

3. I like the simplicity of the NBA logo. Basketball is my favorite sport to watch and play. The colors used (blue and red) really make the figure of a player pop out. It's a logo that would still be easily recognized even when shrunk down many sizes.

4. The Starbucks Coffee logo is very unique and is also one that is recognizable when shrunk down to a small size. I like the fact that it doesn't have any sort of coffee picture in the logo, but instead, a mermaid looking lady. I found this information on the Starbucks website about the lady in the middle of the logo:
"Let’s go all the way back to 1971, to when Starbucks was first coming to be. In a search for a way to capture the seafaring history of coffee and Seattle’s strong seaport roots, there was a lot of poring over old marine books going on. Suddenly, there she was: a 16th century Norse woodcut of a twin-tailed mermaid, or Siren. There was something about her – a seductive mystery mixed with a nautical theme that was exactly what the founders were looking for. A logo was designed around her, and our long relationship with the Siren began."
I think the Siren is a creative and unique idea and makes people think about the logo. I always wondered why there was a lady on the logo, but never took the time to look it up until now. I really like the Starbucks logo and the green color used.

5. I like the cartoon look of the Family Guy logo. The little cartoon television used instead of the dot on the "i" is creative and shows that it's a TV show. I think the way the logo is designed makes it look like a fun, goofy, and entertaining show which is exactly what it is. It's a very simple logo, but the light blue color with the black shadowing and the style/font of the letters give the logo it's fun feeling.
